non-standard characters (accents, tildes, umlauts, etc.)

When importing references* into the new RefWorks, non-standard characters (i.e., letters with accents, tildes, umlauts, etc.) are displaying incorrectly. Each character is preceded by a radical sign (), and sometimes the characters have been replaced with other symbols including those for various currencies.

I figure I could replace all of the non-standard characters in the export file with their html codes, but I'm wondering if there's a better/more convenient way to circumvent the problem. Any suggestions?
